He didn’t do anything to her that first night for a couple of reasons. First, he thought that letting her settle in without trouble would lure her into a false sense of security. Since it didn’t seem like his resident couple were too keen on sharing the details of his former assaults yet, he didn’t think it was a good idea to give them a reason to.

And second, her Fatigue was so high that he would waste too much Spiritual Force trying to get through to her. He was sure that he eventually would, but it wasn’t worth it.

She settled into the guest room upstairs after taking a long shower, the wife lending her some old underclothes and pajamas since they had similar figures (though the still-dieting woman was slightly bigger). The small difference in size didn’t matter too much, though, as it fit her well enough.

Clive watched her climb into bed, falling asleep within minutes of lying down. Unlike the couple down the hallway, the sister hadn’t followed instructions to pray before bed; as a result, all of her protections had faded earlier even before she got into bed. Apparently, she has no Faith in her spiritual defenses.

Despite knowing that it was a bad idea, he was tempted to take advantage of the vulnerability he saw in her. Knowing that this pressure on his victim was what messed up his previous assaults, he had to restrain himself. There is plenty of time, remember – eternity, even.

Her numbers didn’t change at all that night, other than her Fatigue slowly dropping by the time 4am rolled around and her stats disappeared from his sight. It was only the second night since he had become a Spirit Core that he didn’t generate at least a little FEAR during his attack period. He didn’t think it was that big of a deal, since he was planning on starting up again the next night, but his benefactor didn’t seem to think so: he finally had another visit from the Goddess of the Underworld.

Later that day, while the married couple were at work and the sister was out…doing something, he somehow sensed an abrupt change in his mind, as if he was in a crowded elevator and someone else was trying to shove themselves in.

“Hello, Clive. How has it been working out for you? The Spirit Core is great, isn’t it?”

Before he could respond to the invasion, more questions hit him from the Goddess. “Look, I’m not here on a social call. I noticed that your production of fear is down lately; I receive a portion of any emotions you generate down here – did you know that? Anyway, you’re going to have to step it up if you expect me to preserve your presence here. It is expensive in terms of my power to keep you existing as a Spirit Core and maintain the connection between you and the Underworld. Your first few days were very good, providing more than enough to replenish me after your creation, so try to repeat whatever you did.
